Try These DIY Grooming Products For Men

Mix up an extra serving of luxury with these homemade recipes for looking and feeling good. Lay it on thick.

For previous generations, a man’s grooming regimen didn’t amount to much. A shave, a bit of Brylcreem combed through the hair and Brut slapped on the face – that was it. Now it’s a different story, there are tonics and unguents for every skin type and aesthetic. The ingredients list on the back of each product is incredibly long and complicated, if you can read it at all.

So, at a time when you’re likely taking a more relaxed attitude to self-image (whether you’ve attempted a DIY haircut or settled for a fuss-free buzzcut) might we suggest a more natural, pared-back approach to grooming? Not to mention cheaper…

Here we detail four simple recipes (each enough for one use) that will allow you to cook up clear, healthy skin, luxuriant facial hair, and you’ll smell pretty good, too. Get your hands dirty to clean up your look.

Please note: Everyone’s skin is different. These are simple products to create in your home and in no way replaces professional advice. Should you suffer from sensitive skin or any pre-existing skin conditions, avoid using the below recipes. Contact Third Space Medical or a dermatologist if you wish to seek additional advice.

Facial Cleanser

Ingredients: 1/4 cup aloe vera gel, 1/4 cup honey and 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil.

Benefits: Honey and aloe vera are gentle and soothing on the skin, but also tough on dirt and bacteria.

How To: Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Apply a small amount of cleanser to your hand, then massage onto your face in a circular motion. Leave on for 1 minute and then rinse off using a damp flannel.

Beard Oil

Ingredients: 5 tbsp jojoba oil, 1.5 tsp tea tree oil and 1 tsp cedarwood oil.

Benefits: Jojoba oil is rich in vitamins C, B and E that are known to nourish hair. Tea tree oil can unclog hair follicles and has numerous antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. Cedarwood oil also stimulates healthy growth while smelling great.

How To: Mix in a bowl and apply thinly through your beard.

Aftershave

Ingredients: 1 glass of water and 2 tsp chamomile flower essence.

Benefits: Great for sensitive skin.

How To: Boil the water and then slowly mix in the chamomile flower essence. Leave to cool, filter through a coffee filter and put in the fridge. Apply with a cotton pad.

Body Scrub

Ingredients: 1/2 cup coarse sea salt, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup coconut or olive oil and a few drops of your favourite essential oil.

Benefits: Exfoliating your body can banish keratosis pilaris (those little bumps on the backs of your arms, bum, and thighs).

How To: Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and rub over wet skin in circular motions, and then rinse off. You can even swap out some of the salt and sugar for an equal portion of coffee grounds.
